Identification of Environmental Aspects

c) New markets
The introduction of existing products on new markets may bring out new environmental aspects, with respect to which organizations can, for example, examine:

  • the existing infrastructure, eg for the recycling or management of hazardous waste, for the transport and management of critical substances, for the treatment of waste water, for emergencies;
  • technological and educational standards;
  • the degree of awareness of environmental issues in the new market.

d) Choice and composition of services (eg transport or catering services)
For example, organizations will be able to examine the eco-management of service providers, such as:

  • accommodation services (hotels, convention centers);
  • passenger or freight transport services (environmentally-friendly modes of transport, efficient organization of transport, technological standards and vehicle fuel consumption);
  • product range, "green" procurement policy, use of reusable and composting plates, management of catering services waste.

e) Administrative and planning decisions
For example, organizations will be able to examine:

  • the aspects deriving from the execution of planning decisions for the future;
  • the results of experimental scenarios (game theory) or computer modeling;
  • the experience gained thanks to the implementation of similar projects.

f) Product assortment
The aspect concerns organizations that sell or distribute products supplied by third parties; it could be, for example, of:

  • develop a "green" purchasing policy with respect to contractors and products;
  • give preference to products that at the time of sale include a pick-up plan by the producer;
  • search, in the range that interests the organization, the products that carry commonly accepted ecological labels.

g) Environmental performance and environmental behavior of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers
Organizations can, for example:

  • inquire with their contractors and subcontractors about the environmental performance of the activities and their products;
  • examine the product safety data sheets, product line analyzes or relevant extracts provided by the contractors;
  • to take charge of the training of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers (for example, by providing advice in order to reduce environmental risks);
  • include "green" clauses in their contracts.
